Mulching Gold Coast

15 Jul 2020
The root system of a tree is the most important part of the tree, as it is absorbing nutrients and minerals from the soil through the process of Osmosis. Osmosis is how plants are able to absorb water from the soil.

Mulching works best if you can obtain a mixture of tree varieties including palm trees. There are different minerals and carbohydrates that come with each species and when these break down, diverse microorganisms are available. A broad spectrum of mulch will give you the best results for maintaining soil moisture content and keeping your tree’s roots cooler in the warmer months so the ground does not dry out.

If you have a mulcher at home, feed in your tree cuttings and palm fronds and use this around the garden. Also adding Seasol organic fertiliser helps strengthen the cell walls of the tree and if you have strong cell walls, it means that the tree has better resistance to disease and pests. Seasol organic fertiliser has all the minerals from the sea producing better results and healthier plants.

Tree Essence recommends that you use organic mulch that is local to your area, to eliminate outside pests and diseases. You don’t want to bring in a different species of trees in the mulch from different regions, as this could contaminate the soil.  As an example, Camphor Laurel trees after they have finished flowering form berries and if these berries are mulched and chipped up and used as a fertiliser, you will have Camphor Laurels popping up in your garden. So be careful with your source of mulch.

Grass clippings as mulch should be avoided. Grass clippings are best used in compost which will break down into organic matter. Grass creates heat around the base of the tree. Putting grass clippings around the base of the tree creates high moisture and high heat which can cause collar rot. For Palm trees, organic and local mulch is the best solution. This stimulates all the microorganisms in the soil which will aid in reducing the weeds. Weeds are the reproductive part of the bacteria in the soil.

Spread the mulch no thicker than 100m around your garden, otherwise you are reducing the amount of oxygen getting to the roots and you will suffocate them. Call the team at Tree Essence if you have any concerns in regards to how to produce the best results in your garden through mulching and fertilising.
